Motorcycle manufacturers to showcase 2012 line-up amidst enduring market difficulties – Motorcycle manufacturers are determined to shake the market with new products and innovations at Milan 69th International Motorcycle Exhibition
Brussels, 7 November 2011 – In spite of a slow market environment, motorcycle manufacturers are getting ready to launch their new model range at EICMA, one of the biggest fairs for motorcycles, scooters and related products in the world. The crisis that has been affecting the powered two-wheelers market in the EU is lingering since 2008, according to ACEM, the European Association of motorcycle manufacturer, which monitors the developments of European markets.
During the first nine months of 2011, registrations of Powered Two Wheelers fell by -9.03%, amounting to 122,095 less units, compared to the same period in 2010 when 1,352,592 vehicles had been sold.
Since the last quarter of 2008, registrations have begun to fall dramatically in important markets such as Spain, France and Greece. Italy, the biggest EU market, managed to delay the onset of the crisis by one year thanks to a government backed scrapping scheme. By showcasing its latest trends in mobility, sports and leisure vehicles the motorcycle industry is gathering in Milan from November 10th to November 13th for the 69th edition of EICMA.
Marking the greatest losses in the first nine months of 2011 were Italy, with -15.6%, Spain (-15.1%) and Netherlands (-13%). Greece, because of its known economic situation, set the record low in sales of powered two-wheelers: -16.6%. Countries that until now seemed able to contain the damage, such as Germany and France, have reduced their positive trend, -1.57% and -3.58% respectively.
Mopeds and motorcycles do not show large differences. While the sales of mopeds have declined by 10%, vehicles over 50cc show a decline of 8,6%, again compared to the same period of 2010.
Given this trend, 2011 will most likely end with a double-digit decrease. The crisis has effectively erased 25% of the volumes achieved in 2008. The year 2010 ended with a blazing -13.28%, while in 2009 the decline amounted to -12.5% yoy.
Since 2008, European manufacturers represented by ACEM have been calling on European institutions for increased attention for this situation, as it dramatically impacted the labor market. Perhaps the most dramatic case is represented by Spain, where the motorcycle industry has lost a quarter of its original 50,000 jobs since 2007.

However, it is the role of policy makers to reassure consumers and households by ensuring that jobs and manufacturing remain in Europe. New legislation needs to take into account its impact on an already depressed situation”.
